Curfew lifted in the city of Jacksonville; Several arrests made following weekend protests

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — JUNE 1, 6:15 P.M. UPDATE: The State Attorney’s Office said it has assigned three experienced prosecutors to review the cases of those who were arrested during the protests and that any charging decision will be made after that review.

State Attorney Melissa Nelson issued the following statement:

“During this period of unrest, we will continue to work with law enforcement to protect peaceful protests taking part in our city. Those who use violence or destroy property will be prosecuted. And, as I have always done, I will continue to work with community-based organizations and individuals to find solutions to make our justice system and community better for everyone.”

JUNE 1, 4:55 P.M. UPDATE: Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry said he and Sheriff Mike Williams have decided to rescind the curfew in Jacksonville for Monday night.

Curry said in a tweet, “With the help of law abiding citizens and the hard work of law enforcement, Sheriff Williams and I have decided to rescind the curfew tonight. We have the capacity should the need arise, but we very much appreciate the cooperation of the people of our city.”

JUNE 1, 4:50 P.M. UPDATE: A total of 79 people were arrested over the weekend, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

JUNE 1, 7:18 A.M. UPDATE: The mandatory curfew issued for the city of Jacksonville that went into effect over the weekend has lifted. The curfew was put in place from 8 p.m. Sunday through 6 a.m. Monday because of “criminal activity” that Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry said threatened first responders, other people and private property.

While there were two peaceful protests downtown, there were some tense moments that led to damage, protesters blocking off the Main Street Bridge, arrests and the stabbing of a Jacksonville police officer. Action News Jax is working to learn the condition of the officer who was taken to the hospital.

Action News Jax witnessed at least eight people who were arrested Sunday. At least 22 people were arrested Sunday for unlawful assembly, according to Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrest records. The youngest was 18 years old and the oldest was 80. Saturday’s arrests included some charged with trespassing/defying an order to leave, as well as resisting an officer.

The City of Jacksonville will be under a curfew from 8 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday. The curfew does not apply to The Beaches or Baldwin, according to city officials.

According to the city, the sale or distribution of alcoholic beverages has been prohibited until the curfew is lifted.

City officials said this only pertains to the City of Jacksonville and does not include the Beaches or Baldwin.

The prohibition of the sale or transfer of gasoline or any other flammable or combustible liquid, unless it is being put into a vehicle.

JTA said bus routes will run as normal until it is unsafe to continue.

Curfew Conditions

  • People allowed to travel during curfew: First responders, medical personnel, credentialed media, people traveling to or from work, people traveling to or from treatments for medical conditions or receiving medical care, people fleeing danger, people travelling through the city or returning from out of town and people experiencing homelessness.
  • All pedestrian and vehicular movement that does not fall under the allowed conditions is prohibited, including standing and parking in public spaces.
