Man reportedly loses thousands after DEO account hacked

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An Action News Jax viewer reached out to us for help saying his unemployment account was hacked and thousands of dollars stolen.

Robert Nobrega told Action News Jax that someone hacked his unemployment account, changed his bank information and stole his benefits.

“Why didn’t the DEO have the security? That’s my main thing,” said Nobrega. My parents are helping me out right now or else I’d be homeless.” he added.

Nobrega said me he didn’t find out his money had gone to someone else, until he called the Department of Economic Opportunity.

“She said what’s the last four digits of your bank account number and I said that’s not my bank account I said I don’t even know what that is, come to find out someone went inside my connect account and stole $3,190,” Nobrega said.

Nobrega says with no help at all he submitted a fraud claim and reported the theft to the Florida Attorney General’s Office.

“I’ve literally been fighting since June 30th to get this money. I even got a call from the top person in DEO who said it was going to be fixed and now we’re almost 5 or 6 days later and nothing happened,” Nobrega explained.

Today the U.S. Department of Labor reported new jobless claims in Florida almost doubled in one week.

From about 67,000 for the week ending July 4 to nearly 130,000 for the week ending July 11.

The state's website also reports more than 30,000 cases of fraud have been reported so far.

Nobrega fears this could be happening to others.
