‘Staple of Five Points:’ Locals praise Jacksonville’s Black Sheep restaurant ahead of its closure

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A beloved and historic restaurant right in the heart of Five Points, a neighborhood in Jacksonville’s Riverside district, is closing its doors for good come next month.

Now, May 27 will be the last day to enjoy the rooftop views and bites at the Black Sheep Restaurant. The restaurant announced the decision in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

The Black Sheep Restaurant has been a fan favorite in Five Points ever since it opened over ten years ago.

“It’s definitely a landmark. I definitely direct people by that building when I tell them to come to my office here,” Five Points resident Tirza Ochoa told Action News Jax on Wednesday. “It’s like a staple of Five Points.”

Ochoa is just one of many local residents Action News Jax spoke to who were shocked and saddened by this news. For many, Black Sheep added a new dimension and sense of style to the Five Points district.

Meanwhile, Gunnel Humphreys, the owner of Edge City Clothing Boutique in Five Points, said the iconic restaurant has played a huge role in transforming the Five Points district as a whole.

“They took this pie-shaped nothing and made it into something,” Humphreys said with a smile. “And it’s just tragic to hear they’re going to close.”

The restaurant did not say why it’s closing in its announcement, however, and Action News Jax has been unable to reach the owner for comment at this time.
