JEA scam phone calls on the rise, scammer requesting money

JEA is reporting a spike in scam phone calls this weekend.

According to JEA, scammers have called local residents and businesses claiming to be from JEA and threatening to disconnect the customer's service if a large sum of money isn't paid within 30 minutes,

These callers are targeting utility customers across the county, these callers claim the customer is behind on their payments or the meter needs to be replaced. The customer is then instructed to go to Winn-Dixie, CVS or Walgreens to buy a "MoneyPak" payment card, according to JEA.

JEA wants people to know the number has already been reported. JEA reminds customers they will never call to request a credit card to avoid disconnection.
