Logs from Henry Flagler's railroad operation found in St. Augustine

A new archeological discovery was made in the Ancient City.

Support logs more than 100 years old from Henry Flagler's Union station railroad were discovered during a construction project in St. Augustine.

They are being unearthed during construction for a new parking garage and residence hall for Flagler College, right next to the Florida East Coast Railway building. City archeologist Carl Halbirt said some of the wood is being preserved as best as it can be.

"If you were to preserve everything in St. Augustine nothing would be constructed. St. Augustine is a living community, it is always evolving," said Halbirt.

Only some of  the logs will be removed. The school said it expects the garage to be completed by the end of the year and the residence hall by August of 2017.
