‘Please help’: 911 calls describe intense Southside mobile home fire that left mother hospitalized

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — New 911 calls describe the moments a mobile home went up in flames on the Southside and sent one person to the hospital.

Dispatcher: “Fire and rescue (inaudible)... what’s the address of your emergency?”

Laura Wall: “Please help, my trailer is on fire.”

Laura Wall was on the line with fire and rescue during the time of the fire and called for help. Her daughter Christina, who grew up in the home but doesn’t live there now, said her mother now has burns on over 20 percent of her body.

Wall on the phone with fire and rescue said: “My trailer is on fire, I have animals in there.”

“She’s got fluid buildup in the lungs, breathing tubes in as well as a feeding tube,” her daughter said.

The fire broke out on Monday, photos posted by JFRD showed the intense flames and firefighters rushing to it.

Dispatcher: “Is there anybody else inside the home?”

Wall: “There’s nobody else but it’s just going up quick.”

Wall’s sister Ruby Gerundo lives in the home but wasn’t there at the time. She said their dog Tank woke her up and believed that saved her life.

“There was a spark in the air conditioning unit,” she said. “My sister’s dog, you know she is deaf, he warned her there was something wrong she got up to go investigate, heard a loud pop when she opened the door flames engulfed and she turned enough to keep her face from getting burned but her whole back is burnt.”

The dog survived, but three cats and a pet lizard bearded dragon did not. Now, very little is left behind at their home.

“We lost everything, there is nothing salvageable we have to start from scratch,” Gerundo said.

The family says they’re going to do everything they can to make sure Wall is okay.

“She’s the heart of the family every one of us depends on her,” Gerundo said.

“She’s really caring, really sweet, definitely puts everyone before herself it’s time we put her before us,” Christina Wall said about her mother.

There were also a few other calls to 911 as the flames went up. Since the home is a total loss, there has been a Go Fund Me created to help the family as they look to get back on their feet.
