JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Officers seek three people after an officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office was shot at early Tuesday morning.
An officer responded around 3:45 a.m. to reports of suspicious vehicles in an abandoned lot near Scott Road, which is near the intersection of Moncrief Road and Edgewood Avenue.
"We heard a gunshot. My son called it in," said Maria Ervin, who lives in the area.
When the officer arrived, he found two vehicles stuck in the mud, but no one around. JSO said the officer watched the area to see if the drivers would come back for the vehicles.
Another vehicle arrived and three people got out of the vehicle. JSO said the officer called for backup around the time the culprits saw him. One of the culprits fired a gun at the officer, who was not injured.
The officer was not injured in the incident.
"Thankfully he is able to go home to his family for Christmas alive," said Hackney.
The three people then got back into the vehicle they arrived in and drove away, said JSO. The car then crashed into a telephone pole a short distance away and the three people ran.
Officers and a K-9 unit searched for the culprits; however, they were not found.
The vehicle that crashed and one stuck in the mud were reported stolen, said JSO. A gun was also recovered in the vehicle that crashed, said JSO. It is not known at this time if that was the weapon used to fire at the officer.
JSO is continuing to investigate the incident.
