People are asking if removing all Confederate statues in Jacksonville will change anything. This comes after City Council President Anna Lopez Brosche announced she wants to remove Confederate statues from public property.
Tuesday, supporters and critics of her proposal held a rally at Confederate Park in Hogan’s Creek.
The Confederate soldier statues in Hemming Park and Confederate Park and the Andrew Jackson statue at The Jacksonville Landing are three of the many statues in Jacksonville many people say are constant reminders of a horrible time in American history.
The group #TakeEmDownJax stands behind Brosche’s proposal to remove Confederate statues from public property.
“I want to commend the president of City Council here. These statues need to be removed, they are reminders of slavery,” said Wells Todd with Jacksonville Progressive Coalition.
But others question if this move will work.
“Is it going to change slavery if we take down every statue? There’s never going to be an end to all the hate, but why keep bringing it up and causing more,” Tamara Velders said.
Since the announcement, Brosche said she has received several emails, like one saying, "You’re an Asian. You don’t belong here. You aren’t from here. You just can’t cave into these sorry people and screw everyone else. You should not be on the city council."
Brosche said despite the hate e-mails, she’s still pushing the issue. The next step is to present it to full council.
