VERO BEACH, Fla. — A tourist swimming in an area called “shark alley” was bitten by a shark Sunday.
Mary Marcus, 57, was bitten north of Humiston Beach at the Costa d’Este resort, according to TCPalm.com.
Marcus, who is visiting from the Palm Coast, was swimming by herself in an area between two reefs, known as "shark alley" when she was bitten in the thigh, according to WPEC-TV.
“That is where sharks are looking for bait fish,” Erik Toomsoo, a spokesman for the Vero Beach Lifeguard Association, told TCPalm.
After getting bitten, Marcus swam back to shore, walked up to her chair and wrapped her thigh with a towel.
A lifeguard indicated the incident was "a bite and release," according to TCPalm.
Marcus was taken to a nearby hospital. She was later released after getting stitches and antibiotics. The incident was near where a tourist was bitten in May 2012 by a shark, according to TCPalm.
This is the third shark bite within a week.
A Florida woman was bitten by a nurse shark in Boca Raton's Red Reef Park May 15. That woman was taken to a nearby hospital with the 2-foot nurse shark still attached.
An 11-year-old girl was severely bitten by a shark Saturday in Jacksonville, about 200 miles north. She was taken to a hospital and spent nine hours in the trauma unit. She is expected to undergo further surgery this week.
