ROCKFORD, Ill. — A man is accused of fatally stabbing four people and injuring at least five others during a series of attacks in a neighborhood in Rockford, Illinois, authorities said Wednesday.

Update 7:33 p.m. EDT March 27: According to Rockford police Chief Carla Redd, three people died at the scene and a fourth person died at an area hospital, WREX-TV reported. She added that the suspect was in custody.

Police said the four deceased victims were a 15-year-old female, a 63-year-old female, a 49-year-old male and a 22-year-old female, according to WTVO-TV.

The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office told the television station that 11 people were stabbed. There is no new update on their conditions.

Investigators confirmed one of the victims is a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, WIFR-TV reported. The postal worker was one of the fatalities, according to WTVO.

The sheriff’s office said that four people were killed and five were injured within Rockford’s city limits, according to WIFR. The other two people were injured in the sheriff’s office jurisdiction, including a woman who is in critical condition, WIFR reported.

Sheriff Gary Caruana said the suspect was involved in a home invasion on Florence Street, according to WTVO. A female victim is receiving treatment for stab wounds. Caruana added that a good Samaritan who intervened in the attack is also receiving medical care.

Redd said one of the victims was in critical condition, WTVO reported. She added that the suspect is a 22-year-old man.

Original report: Police said the man “attacked and stabbed” multiple people in the area of Cleveland Avenue, Eggleston Road and Holmes Street in Rockford, WREX-TV reported.

Authorities were called to the neighborhood around 1:24 p.m. CDT, according to WTVO-TV.

Authorities released few details about the incident, but the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office told WREX that at least one person died at one of the locations.

Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana and Rockford police Chief Carla Redd were at the scene, according to the television station.

It was unclear what led to the alleged attacks. The conditions of the wounded victims were unclear.

Police have not identified the suspect but said an investigation was ongoing.

“Please be patient while we investigate and avoid the area until further notice,” Rockford police wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
