NEW YORK — Talk about a sky-high price.
According to The Associated Press, a Superman #1 comic – originally priced at 10 cents when it hit newsstands in 1939 – sold at an auction Thursday for a whopping $2.6 million. Online auction company ComicConnect.com said the buyer, much like Superman himself, would like to keep his identity a secret, the AP reported.
This copy of the comic is notable because of its impeccable condition, ComicConnect CEO Stephen Fishler told the AP. The man who sold the comic, March Michaelson, purchased it in 1979 and stored it in a temperature-controlled safe, the news agency reported.
Earlier this year, a 1938 copy of Action Comics #1, which introduced Superman, was auctioned for $3.25 million, according to the AP.
