JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Action News Jax Anchors Letisha Bereola and Tenikka Hughes were honored Thursday night during the 2nd annual Ken Knight Awards.

Both anchors were honored with the awards, named after trailblazing broadcaster Ken Knight. The awards recognize the contributions of Black media members in Jacksonville. The Ken Knight Awards ceremony was created in 2020 by Jacksonville attorney Obi Umunna. Action News Jax Anchor Dawn Lopez, who has emceed the awards for a second year, was one of the inaugural recipients last year.
Ken Knight was a trailblazing broadcaster. Back in 1949, Knight became the first African-American radio announcer in the South, while working at a station in Atlanta, Georgia. He would later create the Ken Knight Show, the first African-American television show in Jacksonville designed to publicly showcase the talents and achievement of Black people. He also trained other African-Americans for careers in the media. Knight’s family was in attendance at the Thursday night’s ceremony and his niece shared more about his many achievements.
