Jacksonville-area colleges discuss potentially reopening campuses in the Fall

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — California just announced 23 state universities will move nearly all classes online in the Fall.

Action News Jax reached out to local colleges to ask about their plans for the Fall semester. Each organization sent the following statements:

University of North Florida:

“We are closely following the guidelines from state and local officials as well as the Florida State University System Board of Governors about plans for reopening. At this point, the situation is evolving too rapidly to announce a plan. As soon as our plans our finalized, we will make an announcement.”

Jacksonville University:

“Our University is looking forward to welcoming students, faculty and staff back to our beautiful campus, and we are hard at work to ensure we can do so safely.”

“We are expecting to safely welcome students back this fall. Our task force is developing detailed plans and policies that will allow us to resume in-person instruction safely this fall. So, barring any unforeseen circumstances in the current trajectory of the outbreak here in Northeast Florida, students will return in August.”

The university released a video from President Tim Cost about their plans. It can be found here.

Edward Waters College:

The administration and its Board of Trustees met last Friday for its annual May meeting. At the meeting the resumption of face to face instruction and modes for a potential reopening of campus for the Fall semester was a topic of discussion and substantial dialogue.

At this juncture, however, no final decision has been made. The College is continuing to make attendant assessments related to operational plans for the 2020-2021 academic year and intends to make a formal announcement soon.

Florida State College at Jacksonville:

“At this time, we plan to hold on campus classes this Fall. We will continue to monitor this as information is available.”
