More view complaints follow as USS Orleck moves to Pier 1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The USS Orleck just moved Monday morning, and already, some of its new neighbors say it’s an eyesore.

Complaints about the ship blocking the view led to Monday’s move from near the Hyatt Hotel to the shipyards, but now, some people in a tower near the shipyards have their own complaints.

The USS Orleck has a new resting place, Pier 1 at the shipyards, after it was previously docked at the Hyatt Hotel. Back in March, Jacksonville City Council members voted unanimously to move the ship to the pier, and although City Council thought it was a good idea, some residents who live near the ship think it’s a terrible move because it’s completely blocking their view.

One resident, who didn’t want her face shown on camera, said that now the warship is docked in her backyard, and she’s afraid it will be there forever.

“The sunrise … We won’t be able to see it anymore. It’s really a shame. It’s too bad we couldn’t compromise somehow, and maybe move it out a little further.” she told Action News Jax. “From a property value perspective, it’s not great.”

She also told Action News Jax’s Nick Gibson that if the warship doesn’t move, she would have no other choice but to leave.

On the other hand, Dean Nix lives near the same warship. The ship isn’t blocking his view, but Nix admitted that even if it did, he has no problem with where the city decides to move it.

“Well long term, I think it’s a great idea. It’s going to be right there at the museum end of the shipyard in West Park,” he said. “It’s going to be a great destination not only for tourists, but Jacksonville natives as well.”

Nix explained that he doesn’t want to stir controversy by being in favor of the move. He said the previous Hyatt Hotel location was good for the ship but only in a temporary fashion.
