JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Local parents say the start of the 2020-21 school year is more emotional because of COVID-19.
Synthia Haywood told Action News Jax, “When they told me I couldn’t walk her to her class, I was devastated a little. I do this every year.”
Thursday morning, masked students lined up outside Terry Parker High, Arlington Middle, and Parkwood Heights Elementary for temperature checks before going on campus.

“I want to make sure they’re still doing it throughout the whole school year -- that’s my decision to keep her in school or not. If that doesn’t happen, I’m pulling her out,” explained Haywood.
Duval County Public School leaders said they have strict guidelines for closing if there’s a spread in coronavirus.
One confirmed case and two with symptoms would shut down a classroom.
Exposure to 20% of the student body would result in school closure.
Action News Jax Reporter Beth Rousseau talked Terry Parker freshman Mukeya Kabobo with his family’s permission.
He said, “You just neve know who got it, so, you gotta be safe from everybody else. Stay your distance, like people say, stay 6 feet apart from each other.
Haywood’s daughter, Joniya Miles said she’ll take safety steps to stay at school
“I’m actually kind of happy to be back in school, because I miss my friends and teacher,” said the 4th grader.
