Patrons are encouraged to bring pet food, towels and blankets to assist in restocking local animal shelters and food pantries.

Collection boxes will be located at the Anastasia Island branch, Bartram Trail branch, Ponte Vedra Beach branch and Southeast branch libraries.

Monetary donations are accepted and used to purchase unfulfilled wishes and needs.

Animal shelters and food pantries are in great need, and many people seeking food assistance also have pets needing food.

“For many of us, pets are a treasured part of our family. This is especially true for the elderly and homebound,” said Heather Sostrom, branch manager of the Anastasia Island Branch Library. “During these tough economic times, many people need a little extra help to care for their pets. That’s why SJCPLS is pleased to help by taking part in the St. Johns Cares pet food and bedding drive.”

St. Johns CARES, Inc. is a nonprofit organization established in 2007 to assist local charities in St. Johns County.

“Our goal is to see that people are able to keep their pets fed and in their homes rather than dropped off at a shelter or abandoned in the streets,” said Mary Ann Kriniske, president of St. Johns CARES, Inc.
