JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The State’s Attorneys Office is investigating two separate incidents in which two people were shot by Jacksonville police Monday night. Both shootings occurred minutes apart.
The first incident happened at 8:30 p.m. when Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was called out to Luxor Club Apartments on Egrets Nest Drive. They were called there after receiving multiple 911 calls, including one from an employee, reporting a woman screaming, police said.
Witnesses observed the woman on the hood of a Tesla banging on the vehicle, police said at a news conference Tuesday morning. Witnesses told officers that they saw a man, identified as Daniel Rodriguez, leave the scene.
Rodriguez, 34, returned and was seen carrying a firearm at his side, police said.
Officers determined that the incident was domestic in nature and Rodriguez was married to the woman who was on the Tesla.
Two officers attempted to approach Rodriguez and he pulled out a handgun, police said. The officers shot Rodriguez. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police: Man holding rifle shot by officers
The second incident occurred moments later at about 8:40 p.m. at a home in the 1100 block of Creeks Ridge Road in Jacksonville’s Atlantic Boulevard Estates neighborhood.
Officers were called there after neighbors reported hearing gunshots. When officers arrived, they came in contact with a man in a garage holding a rifle, police said. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon and exit the garage. The man complied with the officers’ demands and was taken into custody, police said.
While they were taking him into custody, the man’s father appeared in the garage with a rifle, police said. Three officers opened fire on the father, identified as 68-year-old Offero Manalon.
Manalon went back into the home and SWAT was called to the scene, Police said. After about a 3-hour standoff, officers deployed gas into the home. Manalon, who was suffering from a gunshot wound, then exited the home through a back door on a rear porch, police said.
He was taken into custody and to the hospital where he was treated for his wounds. Manalon’s medical condition was not given at the news conference.
