Gov. Kemp extends gas tax suspension and waives dyed diesel penalties until Nov. 5

Gov. Kemp suspends gas tax as prices continue to soar The current average for gas in Georgia is $4.19 a gallon. Diesel is $6.24 a gallon, according to AAA.

ATLANTA — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced Tuesday that he has amended Georgia’s State of Emergency order to waive penalties for using off-road dyed diesel fuel in commercial vehicles and extended the emergency measures through November 5.

The updated executive order aims to provide relief to Georgia truckers and farmers facing financial pressures, a news release from Kemp’s office said.

The measure builds on executive actions taken September 28, which suspended the state motor fuel tax and lifted weight limits on commercial vehicles.

Kemp took the action after consulting with Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, House Speaker Jon Burns and Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper.

Under the order, state officials will not enforce penalties for selling, delivering, or using dyed fuel oil in on-road vehicles throughout the emergency period.

Kemp said the state’s intent to reduce costs for agricultural producers and transport drivers.

“With our farmers and truckers under heavy pressure, we’re leaving no stone unturned when it comes to giving them relief, along with the hardworking Georgians who rely on the goods they produce and deliver,” Kemp said in the release. “I’m thankful for the support of our partners in the legislature on these measures as we continue to put Georgia workers and families first.”

The latest action follows earlier price decreases reported by AAA after the suspension of the state motor fuel tax.

Regular gasoline prices in Georgia dropped by roughly 33 cents per gallon over the past week, while diesel prices decreased by more than 42 cents per gallon. Georgia’s average price for regular gasoline is 51 cents below the national average, the release detailed.
