Tropical Storm Isaias: School districts in Florida’s Panhandle announce Thursday & Friday closures

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Tropical Storm Isaias is forecast to become a hurricane as it impacts Florida’s Panhandle, and school districts there are making preparations.

Several Northwest Florida districts have announced Thursday and/or Friday closures.

Here is the latest information from the Florida Department of Education:

  • Bay County Schools – Shutting down operations on Friday; schools, teachers and students were already scheduled to be off that day and Monday for fall break.
  • Escambia County Schools will be closed Friday, October 9, 2026.
  • Gadsden County Schools will be closed Friday, October 9, 2026.
  • Gulf County Schools will dismiss at 12:00 on Thursday, October 8, 2026 and remain closed on Friday, October 9, 2026.
  • Holmes County Schools will be closed Friday, October 9, 2026.
  • Jackson County Schools will be closed Friday, October 9, 2026.
  • Liberty County Schools will be closed Friday, October 9, 2026.
  • Okaloosa County Schools will be closed Thursday, October 8, 2026 and Friday, October 9, 2026.
  • Santa Rosa County Schools will be closed Friday, October 9, 2026.
  • Walton County Schools will be closed Thursday, October 8, 2026 and Friday, October 9, 2026.
  • Washington County Schools will dismiss at 12:00 on Thursday, October 8, 2026 and remain closed on Friday, October 9, 2026.
  • Northwest Florida State College – will be closed Thursday, October 8, 2026 and Friday, October 9, 2026.

The First Alert Weather Team said tropics threats/impacts for Jacksonville/NE Florida/SE Georgia are expected to be none.

However, we will see ’local’ Nor’easter conditions through Thursday with gusty winds, rough seas & surf & heavy rain at times ... beach erosion ... minor to moderate flooding at times of high tide along the coast/intracoastal, St. Johns River & its tributaries ... conditions will be enhanced somewhat over the upcoming weekend due to distant Isaias to the west.
