9-year-old child in Putnam County died from coronavirus Health Department confirms

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — The Health Department confirms a 9-year-old has died from COVID-19 in Putnam Couty. This is the youngest coronavirus-related death in the state of Florida.

She is one of five children to have died from the virus in Florida.

Putnam County is leading locally when it comes to cases affecting younger people.

28% of the county’s total cases affect people between the age of 0-24.

22% of cases in Duval County are in the 0-24 age range.

That compares to 27.9% in St. Johns County and 20% in Clay County.

Action News Jax reporter Courtney Cole spoke to a UF Health pediatrician who said kids are dying from a complication from COVID-19 called MISC.

“We have now had the disease called MISC that happens, four-to-six-weeks later that is certainly very serious, and kids can die from that,” Dr. Mobeen Rathore said.
