Inmate dies in hospital after being found unresponsive in cell, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is investigating the in-custody death of an inmate who died at a local hospital Thursday after being found unresponsive in his cell.

Authorities identified the inmate as 60-year-old Thomas Michael Trefzer.

Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department personnel responded to his cell and transported him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Trefzer had been in custody since September 16, following his arrest on charges including fentanyl trafficking, DUI, and other traffic-related offenses.

Detectives are currently treating the incident as a natural death pending final findings from the Medical Examiner’s Office.
