CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — An Orange Park man remained in Clay County jail Tuesday on no bond charged with homicide in the death of a child that was in his care.
Anthony Bryce Thompson, 23, was arrested Friday in the death of the child who died on July 15, according to a Clay County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
Deputies were called that day to a home in response to a child choking, according to the report that’s partially redacted. After arriving on the scene, Thompson escorted deputies to the child who was unresponsive.
Clay County Fire Rescue took the child to HCA Orange Park and then the child was flown by helicopter to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, the report states.
When the child was hospitalized, authorities believed it was a medical related incident, “however no conclusive testing had been done at that time,” the report states.
“Based on the facts and circumstances determined during this investigation, the suspect was an adult and the sole caregiver of *redacted child, at the time of the fatal injury,” the report states.
“The injury was determined to be abusive head trauma likely caused by severe acceleration/deceleration (shaking). The severity of the injury showed a grossly careless disregard for the safety of *redacted.”
Thompson faces one count of aggravated manslaughter of a child. He’s scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 3, according to Clay County jail records.
