International Overdose Awareness Day

Jacksonville, FL — August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day. So Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department and Drug-Free Duval are offering online training sessions to help you recognize the signs of an overdose and teach you how to use NARCAN, which is an FDA-approved treatment for an opioid overdose.

There will be two training sessions Monday. Click here to register for the 10 a.m. session. Click here to register for the 2 p.m. session. Participants are eligible to receive free NARCAN.

JFRD reports nearly 1200 overdose deaths in Jacksonville from 2016 to 2018. More than 80% of those deaths were caused by opioids. Overdose calls since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic are up nearly 40%. JFRD says it responds to 15 overdose calls per day.
